New Abstracts: Weaving Patterns
Judith Weinshall Liberman
The WEAVING PATTERNS series of acrylic paintings was begun in 2022, when I was 93 years old. After publishing numerous books over a period of many years, including ten books of sonnets in 2021, and after creating more than three dozen paintings in 2022 exploring patterns, I decided to explore, through the medium of painting, the patterns of weaving. Since I was legally blind, I decided to create small paintings, using only primary and secondary colors.
I first became aware of weaving when I was in nursery school and our teacher created a tiny basket by weaving strips of palm leaves. Decades later, when I was studying toward an M.F.A. degree in Art Education at Boston University, I learned not only how to weave but also how to build a loom.
The WEAVING PATTERNS series afforded me an opportunity to explore variety within uniformity. Each of the works in this series is done on a black painted stretched canvas, to make the colors stand out. The paintings are composed of a series of squares of equal size arranged in a predetermined order and are designed to show color relationships.. Although the squares I painted to create the designs are not quite precise, I found that to be an asset because they look less mechanical and more like they were painted by a 93 year old woman who is legally blind.
